Parliamentarians sign IDDC statement on the European elections On 20 January, 5 Members of the European Parliament signed the IDDC statement "I stand up for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Europe and Overseas." This campaign aims to raise awareness of the rights of persons with disabilities in developing countries amongst European parliamentarians and candidates.
IDDC has developed this statement to ensure that the close relationship with the European Parliament continues beyond the Election Day in June.
Members of the IDDC EU Task Group met with the MEPs Fiona Hall and Liz Lynne at the European Parliament. Liz Lynne agreed that "the UN Convention provides the most effective mechanism for ensuring inclusion of disability within international development."
The EU Task Group on its part will continue to ask for support from parliamentarians and candidates to promote the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in a development context. Persons with disabilities are often amongst the most marginalised sections of the community in developing countries, having no access to the most basic services such as health care or education. "That’s why it is important that the EU addresses the rights and needs of persons with disabilities in its development policies; if this does not happen, the Millennium Development Goals cannot be achieved", said Johannes Trimmel, Chair of IDDC.
